The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or just the United Kingdom, is a country located on the British Isles, covering the whole island of Great Britain, the north-eastern one-sixth of the island of Ireland and many smaller surrounding islands.
The four nations that make up the United Kingdom are also countries in their own right and have a certain extent of autonomy. These include England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The capital city of the United Kingdom is London, which is also the capital of England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own capitals which are Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
The United Kingdom is constitutional monarchy meaning a hereditary sovereign reigns as the head of state. The current monarch is King Charles III, who ascended the throne on 8 September 2022.
The Prime Minister is the head of government of the United Kingdom. The current Prime Minister is Rishi Sunak who has been in office since 25 October 2022.
