Sarsgaard was born in New York City to actors Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Her father is of Austrian, Danish, English, German, Irish, Norwegian, and Northern Irish (Scotch-Irish) descent and Her mother is of English, French-Canadian, German, Jewish (of Latvian Jewish, Polish Jewish and Russian Jewish descent), Scottish, Swedish, Swiss and Welsh descent. Her uncle is actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Her sister Ramona Sarsgaard is an actress.
