Santaolalla was born in Buenos Aires to Gustavo Santaolalla and Alejandra Palacios. His father is of Argentine, Ashkenazi Jewish (from Austria, Russia and Ukraine), Italian, Romanian and Slovenian descent and His mother is of Ashkenazi Jewish (from Belarus) and Spanish descent.
